A SEARCH FOR CP VIOLATION IN HYPERON DECAYS: STATUS REPORT FROM THE HYPERCP EXPERIMENT AT FERMILAB Sharon L. White, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL representing the HyperCP Collaboration HyperCP is performing a sensitive search for direct CP violation by comparing the angular distribution of the proton in the lambda helicity frame from the sequential cascade-lambda decay to the anti-proton from the corresponding anti-process. A difference in these distributions would be a signal for direct CP violation. HyperCP took data in the Fermilab fixed target run that ended in September, 1997. Over one billion charged cascades and 0.3 billion charged anti-cascades were collected. Based on this event sample, HyperCP expects to measure the hyperon CP violation asymmetry with an uncertainty of about 2 X 10**-4. Results from a preliminary analysis of approximately 10% of our data will be presented.
