Progress Updates and Issues

Leon Beverly's meeting summaries in italics.

Upstream Beamline

BEAM - Beamline

Chuck Brown:

The SY 120 meeting scheduled for 10 AM Monday, October 9th, will NOT take place - I will be out of town until noon on Monday.  I do plan on making the rounds on Monday and privately discussing the status of SY120. Meanwhile, I include below a list of pressing needs as I understand them. Please correct me if I am mistaken!

  • Beam to SY Dump:
    • Waiting to hear from safety group on SA and SAD
    • Interlock and P.S. tests in Enclosure-C after LCW flushing finishes next week
    • Instrumentation needs MI RF signal in P3, TG8,9, and SYSB
  • Beam to Meson-MTest:
    • Need SA and SAD for MTest, MC6
    • Need SWIC scanners and Arcnet in MS1,2,3,and 4
    • Need fiber for ACNET in Meson
    • Need P.S. tests in MTest
    • Need pinhole collimator and controls in MS3
  • Other Items:
    • Need multiwires for P3
    • Need new BPM readouts (McClure)

Dave Carey:

Running diagnostic programs (TRANSPORT, TURTLE) to determine which magnet elements are the restricting apertures in the beam line; Brian Kramper is the Beams contact for controls software issues; Gary has "start" of MC7, as well as element locations in US MC7, located on the floor plan drawing.

UBL - Upstream Beamline Detectors

BCKOV

Jim Kilmer designing support stands; Ed LaVallie desiging chamber support stands; Raja studying locations of chambers in the MC6 area, he is also asking Earl Swallow to pursue mirror re-coating; E690 chamber data is requested to go directly to E907 DAQ system i.e. not routed through the controls Acnet system first.

Targets

TGTW - Target Wheel

CTGT - Cryogenic Targets

NTGT - NuMI (MINOS) Target

TPC - Time Projection Chamber

Survey of JGG side surface through the aperature is complete, survey was needed to allow locating attachment point for TPC rails to JGG steel.

Magnets

Will seek bids for installing main LCW headers in MC7.

ZipTrack

Raja:

Further significant progress on Ziptrack. The progress can be summarized as follows.

  1. All Hardware and electronics (that exist) work.
  2. The cart was waiting on some bearings. Once they are in, Lindenmeyer estimates a week to completion.
  3. The software was running  on the Jensen computer, but was hanging every 2 minutes or so. The computer has to be powered cycled to recover.
  4. The clue came from the old computer which only worked in the non-turbo (16MHZ) mode. The 33MHz turbo used to fail. Dave Slimmer was able to put a new hard drive on the old computer and get it to boot. The software was restored from the recovered CD-rom. Using this computer, we ran ~ 20 moves with no hangs in the non-turbo mode.
  5. We then got into the Jensen computer and turned off the turbo mode in BIOS and also lowered the IDE speed to normal. With these settings the Jensen computer also moved Ziptrack 5 times without hangs. So we have two computers that work. The problem with the hangs is clearly the CAMAC interface board which is old and slow. It should be possible to replace this + the camac controller with newer PREP supported versions.
  6. We are working on getting spares for the electronics modules. DSP encoder digitizer and Motor Controllers have no spares. It may not be possible to get spares for these since DSP no longer makes  CAMAC modules according to John Krider.
  7. Ultimately someone may want to switch to Labview (Adam Para and I are investigating the options). The attraction here is that one can purchase Labview compatible electronics + software drivers and motion libraries off the shelf. This may not be timely for MIPP needs.

Leon Beverly:

From Raja's email, it looks like the ziptrack will be ready soon. Since the powering of the magnets from MDB will not be ready for 6 weeks, should I investigate powering the magnets temporarily from MS5 where 2 existing supplies can be used. It will cause very little extra over head to connect the magnets to those supplies because the DC bus is already passing by each magnet.

One issue.. when you ziptrack what kind of reference do you like to see between the magnet current and the magnetic field? The power supplies regulate at 0.01% using a transductor and electronics. So it is possible that the absolute value of current will not be the same from PS to PS because of the active electronics. In addition to the transductor, there is a 5000A, 50mv shunt in each supply. Still the absolute value is not known because they are not calibrated, but the read out would be constant (within the tolerance of the shunts) for PS to PS.

If we were to place a permanent hall probe in each magnet aperture, then maybe that would be sufficient for future reference?

Ziptrack may be ready about October 28th, will consider temporary power from MS5 to magnets to expidite ziptracking.

JGG - Jolly Green Giant

LCW header installation on JGG 50% complete.

Rosie

Spaces between coils on the US & DS ends of Rosie need to be shimmed &endash; Jim Ellermeier; LCW headers mounted on Rosie, hoses will be added later.

CKOV - Cerenkov

Move from PC4 to MC7 about the last week in November.

DC - Drift Chambers

E690 Chambers

Meeting of the minds next week to discuss chamber repair &endash; Pierrick, Adam, Ed, David Miller, and others; next week - ship discriminator towers to IIT for testing.

Iowa Chambers

Support stand drawing in progress; Nick Solomay may join effort.

TOF - Time of Flight

RICH - Ring Imaging Cerenkov

Mirror alignment complete, measured RTD continuity &endash; they are ok, checking LED readouts, moving electronics from PC4 to MC7 Tuesday, October 8th; chillers, gas system, and any other equipment, should be forwarded to Peter for determination of location in MC7, when last used at PC4 the chiller and gas system was located beam left toward the DS end of the RICH.

ECAL - EM Calorimeter

Checking on available lead at Fermilab; need to discuss ability to handle prefabricated unit in MC7 with Mike Mascione; whether to support EM on independent stand or off of NCAL? The details need to be looked at, but Ingrid feels supporting off NCAL will be more feasible.

NCAL - Neutral Calorimeter

Checking on available lead at Fermilab; need to discuss ability to handle prefabricated unit in MC7 with Mike Mascione; whether to support EM on independent stand or off of NCAL? The details need to be looked at, but Ingrid feels supporting off NCAL will be more feasible.

Gas Systems

Terry Tope and Dave Northacker:

We got together and talked about gas for a couple of hours. Out of the discussion I typed up some documents.

gas_system_questions_comments (.html or .doc)
This document contains comments and questions about each detector. Basically we just want to get ball park ideas of the basic parameters. The size of the chamber, the gas mixture, the flow rate required, any special purity considerations, etc.
E907_gas_summary (.xls)
This contains a spreadsheet "Detector Gas Matrix" (.html) with info on the chambers. It has the gas volume, hydrogen equivalency for safety calcs, estimated flowrate, and cost estimates. We would like to fill this matrix out as accurately as we can. This will allow reasonable planning for sizing system components and for the number of bottles and the space required.

It also contains a 2nd spreadsheet "Gas specs" (.html) that shows the prices of bottles and dewars used in the cost estimates.
c4f10_systems_and_purification(.html or .doc)
This file contains information I came across concerning C4F10 systems.

DAQ - Data Acquisition

MC - Monte Carlo
