Progress Updates and Issues

Leon Beverly's meeting summaries in italics.

Upstream Beamline

BEAM - Beamline

UBL - Upstream Beamline Detectors

BCKOV

E706 CKOV may not work, Raja will take a few days to confirm &endash; for physics details contact Raja. Jim Kilmer has a quote to resurface the mirrors.

Mike Heffner:

There was a question in the meeting today about the windows in the beam cerenkovs that we have. I just looked at the drawing and it shows quartz windows. So provided that no one has changed them we are set.

Targets

TGTW - Target Wheel

CTGT - Cryogenic Targets

Raja:

Steve Geer and Dan Kaplan (Muon Storage ring) are asking whether we can find common cause with them in filling our target and their Japanese liquid absorber with the same Hydrogen filling system. We need to explore this, since the lab might try and kill both birds with one stone (and also bear the expense). The downside might be that we need to give the Japanese some of our hall area and time to do a fill (could be during a shutdown). This is still in its formative stages. According to Geer, the idea came from John Cooper.

NTGT - NuMI (MINOS) Target

TPC - Time Projection Chamber

Requisition for stand, cart & rail fabrication forward to LLNL 10/17. Ron Soltz to check progress of stick repair with Fermilab EE Department.

Magnets

ZipTrack

Raja:

We think we will need 6 hall probes (3 for Jolly Green Giant and 3 for Rosie). We can calibrate the probes in Industrial Building 1. I am told by Mike Tartaglia that Darrel Orris is the expert on this. We should plan on placing two probes at the field maximum point. One on top of magnetic field  volume and one at the bottom. The third probe should ideally be placed at a point where the filed has fallen to ~ 1/2 its maximum.

If we can acquire these probes (which should also come with their mounting brackets) and calibrated, we need to do only one Ziptrack of each magnet. We can use any power supply. We should be able to move the Ziptrack to MC7 by the beginning of next week.

Another expert on placing probes is Rich Smith of D0. We should also consult him.

Are there Hall probes around the lab or do we have to buy these?

We did a Zip with the old program today with hall probes on. It worked. A new program Mike Roman has built was having some bugs. So it will be a few days before we are able to move it to MIPP. In the mean time, Leon and I need to buy (get hold of) a couple of Hall probes, calibrate them and install them in JGG and ROSIE.

As regards costs, it is my understanding that the Tech work on this (Mike ROman, Korienek's group) came from FNAL. We paid for the CART. Measuring the fields should be similar to surveying, a service provided by FNAL?

Mike Tartaglia:

I spoke with Darryl regarding our Hall probe inventory and Tesla meters that we use to read them out. We have a fair number of them in our inventory, some of which are already on loan or in repair. I gather that Doug Jensen has already worked with Darryl in the recent past to borrow probes, so I suggest he contact Darryl directly to see whether we have sufficient hardware to loan your group for your calibration tests. Also, if you need to use our calibration magnet, that facility is available as well. Rich Smith has been a frequent customer, and might be the quickest contact to help you get set up in our lab; however, we ask that whoever performs the calibrations first get training from us in the proper safe use of the system (if they have not already been trained).

JGG - Jolly Green Giant

The following is needed prior to ziptracking JGG:

2-500kW power supplies operational

10/30

install hoses on JGG coils

10/22

get MS6 LCW sys operational

10/31

install LCW headers in MC7

11/8

Ziptrack JGG starting

11/11

Rosie

shim coils & connect hoses

11/22

CKOV - Cerenkov

DC - Drift Chambers

DC1-4 (E690 Chambers)

Pierrick Hanlet:

We have some prototype level of working electronics and a plan to make the remaining boards. Bill Luebke, of IIT, has routed both a Shaper and a Discriminator board. We plan to stuff a couple of channels of each over the next couple of days.

Transfer frame aligned, but not epoxied; chamber opening planned for 10/25; DAQ &endash; test stand work ongoing; discriminator stands prepared for shipping to IIT for testing; DC#3 &endash; Gary will start drawings for support stand; Ingrid continuing work on locking stand to floor; DC#4 &endash; support stand design ongoing.

DC5 & DC6 (Iowa Chambers)

Support stand drawings complete, back to LaVallie for checking

TOF - Time of Flight

RICH - Ring Imaging Cerenkov

Need to re-open tank to check LED readout; VME & front-end board at Harvard for 3-4 weeks of testing.

ECAL - EM Calorimeter

NCAL - Calorimeter

Gas Systems

DAQ - Data Acquisition

MC - Monte Carlo

Installation

Alignment

Virgil will set up a network in MC7 using the laser tracker.

MC7 Enclosure and Counting House

Installation of exit & EM lights in progress; the floor has been sealed in the DS area of MC7.
